The Makers of Things - a short film collection by Anne Hollowday - documents the work and workshops of the Society for Model and Experimental Engineers, a sprawling organisation with members all over the world. Their common tools and methods mask a huge array of interests and skills, from experimental tinkerers to woodworkers and librarians, all brought together under the roof of their South London headquarters.

The Society
SMEE isn't like any other engineering society. It's a community united by a passion for making things and testing ideas. Their unparalleled devotion to their craft is evidence of a universal truth that's relevant to us all; we learn only by doing.

Pop-up books taken to another level

Auburn's David A. Carter is one of the world's best-known paper engineers, as the creators of pop-ups are known. Carter takes pop-ups into the realm of fine art. Blue Line Gallery in Roseville opens a show Saturday, Sept. 19th, that focuses entirely on Carter's Red Dot book series.

Didn't plan to do a chroma key/green screen effect - so it is a little rough on post.

My parents perform this art (Ebru in Turkish, Paper Marbling in English) and the footage was shot for a promo piece (https://vimeo.com/22325846) I was working on back then and my dad asked me to put a video together for him. This is what came out of that.

The Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art has organized a major traveling exhibition of new work by contemporary Japanese artist Motoi Yamamoto. The exhibition will premiere in Charleston May 24-July 7, 2012, as a featured presentation of the Spoleto Festival USA. Return to the Sea: Saltworks by Motoi Yamamoto will travel nationally after its inaugural presentation, including stops in Los Angeles, CA, Charlotte, NC, and Monterey, CA. The centerpiece of the exhibition will be a site-specific installation created entirely out of salt by the artist during his two-week residency at the Halsey Institute.

The Smokehouse

Smith joined forces with Victorian grower, gatherer, hunter and cook Rohan Anderson to build a pioneer-style cold smokehouse on his property just outside Ballarat. This short film by Melbourne-based production studio Commoner captures the vision of the smokehouse build and the story of Anderson’s motivation.
